"[SJ] has been absolutely dedicated to tailoring the course to fit the students. [they are] continually observing our engagement in class discussion and adapts [their] teaching methods ever so slightly so that they can be as appropriate as possible and we can learn the most that we can" - Feedback from a student |
I have taught in courses on moral philosophy (at the LSE, University of Cambridge, and VU Amsterdam), politics and international relations, biotechnology, AI for environmental risk, and sustainability leadership. I have achieved consistently high teaching evaluation scores, including a perfect 1.0 student satisfaction score teaching global justice at the LSE. I am currently exploring options for developing new education programmes in Existential Risk Studies at the University of Cambridge.

The three key planks of my teaching practice are as follows
- Constructive alignment: I ensure that my students learning activities are closely aligned with course aims and assessment criteria. This motivates students and ensures a high degree of consistency between lectures and classes.
- Small group teaching: I set my students small group activities in class that encourage peer to peer learning and student participation whilst simultaneously maintaining a strong narrative structure that gives order and meaning to students learning experiences
- Feedback: I provide iterative feedback that encourages students to see all their assignments as a whole, highlighting areas of progress and suggesting ways for students to improve. This gives students high quality personalized feedback and encourages to engage with my comments to improve their future performance.
"[SJ] is always willing to go the extra mile for every student. [they provide] rich, remarkably beneficial feedback to both coursework and queries of any kind in an exceptionally timely manner. [they structure their] classes in a way which is beneficial to all learning styles, and encourages class participation and involvement in a way which exerts no excess pressure upon students, and makes classes innovative and enjoyable. I believe that [they are] an exceptional teacher, with an inspiring interest in this subject area. [they are] a teacher who is clearly willing to go above and beyond the call of duty for each and every one of [their] students, in order to assist them in building on previous success and development" - extract from citation for LSESU Teaching Excellence Award nomination
"From all the teachers I have had over the years, [they have] had the most detailed, wide ranging and interesting knowledge. As well as factual knowledge, [they] also teache in a way that would further our skills in terms of writing methods for the module and allows us to infer our own reasoning by making us understand a point from different angles" - Feedback from a student
